Sharing and Learning Workshop Insights from Japanese and German Adult Learning & Education Handing over of equipment to DNFE

On Monday, the 14th of January, a Sharing and Learning Workshop will take place at DVV International’s Regional Office in Vientiane. As the Lao Government and several development partners are paying high attention to the development of Lifelong Learning in the country in order to ensure a continuing educational development of Lao PDR, non-formal and adult education will play a more important role to reach the economical and political objectives.

Therefore, this year’s meeting will be focusing on insights in Japanese and German Adult Education. While Ms Junko Onodera, a volunteer at DVV International, will open the workshop by presenting about the current situation of Lifelong Learning in Japan, Mr Christian Haager, director of an adult education center near Munich, on the other hand will take the opportunity to look back on the roots of adult education in Germany from the beginning of the 20th century until today.

Meanwhile, in Germany the year 2019 will be a special year for many Adult Education Centers - so called “Folkhighschools” - as they will be celebrating their 100th anniversary. What was the reason for founding exceptionally many Folkhighschools in the year 1919? What are their present tasks? What will be the challenges which Adult Education and Learning in Germany and maybe other countries will have to face in the future - considering the digital revolution, migration and refugees as well as the financing of Adult Education?

The meeting will bring together some 25 experts to learn through and discuss about mentioned presentations as well as to reflect on similarities and differences regarding Lao PDR. The outcomes of this event are supposed to enrich the discussions within the Ministry of Education and Sports and between the development partners.

The workshop will be followed by a handing over ceremony of equipment to the Department of Non-formal Education, Ministry of Education and Sports. The Ministry will be represented by Ms. Philany Phissamay, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Non-formal Education. Furthermore, Ambassador Mr Jens Luetkenherm and DVV International’s Regional Director Mr Uwe Gartenschlaeger will be participants and representatives for Germany.

At the close of the event, DVV International will be handing over equipment to the Department of Non-Formal Education, including training equipment for the Community Learning Center in Vientiane Capital.
